Breaking up with sugar: want to know what worked for me?
I’ve read so many articles that offer tips and great advice on how to eliminate, or at least reduce, the amount of sugar that most Americans consume every day. “3 Steps to Stop Eating So Much Sugar”; “How to Quit in 3 Days”; “8 Sugary Foods to Avoid”, and so on, and so on. Great suggestions that I know have worked for others but for me the multi-step, multi-day approaches gave me too many opportunities to fall off the wagon.
One day I read one fact that changed the way I fuel my days. Here it is: on average a female should consume no more than 25 grams per day. I walked away from the computer into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator.
The Yoplait Greek yogurt that is my go to breakfast item: 7 grams
The Luna energy bar that is my mid/late morning snack: 9 grams
The morning cup of coffee with 1 teaspoon of raw sugar: 5 grams
This is math I can do! 21 grams of sugar before noon, whoa, this is a factoid that hit home with me.
That’s all folks. Find 3-4 foods or beverages that are part of your daily diet and check the label.
What I know for sure: I’m not giving up my Greek yogurt and weekdays I need the protein fix from my Luna bar. I’m working on giving up my 1 tsp of sugar in my 1 cup of coffee but…for now, 5 grams is a small price to pay for the deliciousness of my morning coffee.
The rest of the day I drink water. I eat fruit and veggies. I have a string cheese once in a while. The End.
Easy breezy and my energy level is straight and level. No dips and spikes. And I sleep great!
