Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a medical referral/prescription for PHA?
No, you do not. This is an elective assessment and is not covered by your insurance.
The PHA Consult will also include recommendations for home modifications, family support analysis, family training and general equipment education. This PHA is to provide recommendations from a physical therapist to help you plan for your recovery once you are home and help provide education for the best post surgical outcome.
Why should I consult PHA? I am already going to a preoperative class provided by my doctor.
Preoperative hospital or physician classes generally do not address all the patient’s individual and unique circumstances leading into surgery. While informative and necessary, it is unable to address your personal concerns and unique home environments. The PHA is tailored specifically for you with your support system, and home environment information taken into account. Whether you are 40 years old or 90 years old and getting a total joint replacement, PHA can help you complete and organize all the information you have received!
Does my insurance cover this?
PHA is a private pay service. Payment information will be collected before the assessment is provided.
What do I wear?
PHA requires no special apparel on the day of your appt! Virtual appointments could occur at work, home or even on the road! (Just not driving at the same time)
When and how many times would I benefit from consulting PHA?
Your visit will be a one-time pre-operative event that is usually recommended to be completed 1-2 months before surgery. If needed and requested, continued care management will be implemented by your Preferred Living Solutions Care Manager.

Meet Your Physical Therapist
Betsy Hage, MPT, CLT is a physical therapist and care navigator who loves helping patients feel prepared, supported, and confident—especially when facing surgery. She graduated from Wake Forest University and East Carolina University to earn her degrees. Having been based in Wilmington and now in Raleigh, North Carolina, Betsy has spent her career working with patients across outpatient clinics, hospitals, retirement communities, home health, and rehabilitation settings, giving her a clear understanding of what patients really need to succeed.
Specifically, Betsy works closely with surgeons, therapists, and care teams to guide patients through the entire joint replacement experience—from pre-surgery preparation to recovery at home. She focuses on making the process easier to understand, answering questions before they become worries, and helping patients know what to expect at every step. Her goal is simple: help patients feel ready for surgery and supported during recovery, so they can get back to doing what they love.
Betsy is known for her calm, practical approach and her belief that great outcomes start with good education and communication. She combines evidence-based care with genuine encouragement and advocacy for each patient.
Outside of work, Betsy enjoys traveling with family and friends, volunteering with Step Up Ministries, staying active through exercise, and learning about new foods and recipes.
