As care managers, we research and build relationships with the wonderful people who run home care companies. If you or a loved one is recovering from surgery or needs long-term care for a chronic illness, home care services are a good resource. Services range from skilled nursing care to household support, including cleaning, cooking, and running errands. Knowing what questions to ask can help ensure you receive quality assistance. Our care managers don’t get any kickbacks or referral fees when we refer you to a company for services. If we refer you, it’s because we have seen how that home care company has provided care to our clients in the past, and we are confident they will provide good service for you.
There are two types of home care: skilled nursing care or companion care. Often, when you are discharged from the hospital, the discharge planner will arrange a nurse visit to check your wounds or change bandages. Your insurance typically covers this type of home care because it requires a nurse to provide the care. The nurse usually stops by, completes the task, and is on their way.
Companion care home care helps with your activities of daily living (ADLs). This could include assistance with showering or getting to the toilet. Maybe some light housekeeping or meal prep. Having this type of care allows you to remain more independent and in your own home for a more extended amount of time. Often, seniors say, “I’m fine, I don’t need help.” Often failing to see that if they let someone provide a little extra support, they can avoid rehospitalization or unnecessary risks to themselves.
